JUNE IN THE VEGETABLE AND FLOWER GARDEN

  • The kitchen garden will be growing so fast now, the days are light, plenty of sunshine but also thundery rain storms. Runner beans, tomatoes, cucumbers & sweetcorn should all be planted outside now. Feed these potash loving plants once a week and keep watered in dry weather.

  • I continue to sow salad crops, raddish and spinach, these can be direct sown outdoors but they like a shady spot rather than full sun.

  • Keep an eye out for white fly on herbs such as Parsley, and watch out for the cunning Cabbage White Butterfly, they make rather a mess of all the brassica family!

  • Continue to earth up potatoes, they are growing quickly now, once the flowers form it is a good sign the tubers are developing.

  • Weeds are a massive problem in the vegetable garden, after warm rain they just appear out of nowhere and completely take over if you allow it. Keep hoeing as much as possible, they compete for nutrients and water.

  • In the flower garden all the half hardy plants are safe outside, water daily if the weather is dry and feed weekly too with a high potash feed like tomato food.

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage more flowers, if perennials have finished flowering cut them down, feed them and hopefully a second flush will appear later in the summer.

  • To protect from strong winds and heavy rain it is good practice to stake tall plants such as Delphiniums, Lupins, Agastache and Campanula.
