Achillea (Yarrow)

Hardy & vigorous mat forming deciduous perennial. Thrives in a moist but well drained soil in full sun. Height & spread 60 cm x 60 cm. Outstanding cottage plant for bees & butterflies.

Agapanthus (African Lilly)

Architectural stunning plant for a sunny & sheltered border. Makes an ideal patio/container plant. Large umbels of flowers during late summer. Can grow to 120 cm with a spread of 60 cm.

Agastache (Mexican Giant Hyssop)

Wonderful scented perennial for bees & butterflies. Spikes of blue flowers July into the Autumn. Loves full sun but will grow in semi shade. Height & spread 60 cm x 40 cm.

Anemone x hybrida (Japanese Anemone - Windflower)

Clump forming hardy perennial for any moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Flowers late summer to autumn. Height & spread 80 cm x 45 cm.

Aster (Michaelmas Daisy)

Busy deciduous perennial with daisy like flowers from late spring to summer. Grows in well drained soil preferring full sun. Height & spread 70 cm x 45 cm. Wonderful plant for bees & butterflies.

Astrantia (Masterwort)

Upright hardy perennial for sun or partial shade. Flowers from early summer in to the early autumn. Height & spread 60 cm x 60 cm

Cimicifuga (Bugbane or Cohosh)

Wow, this really is a spectacular perennial, happy in semi or full shade, requires a moist but fertile soil. Stunning flower spikes of pale pink to white very late in the season. It can get very tall so back of the border is essential 120 cm x 90 cm. The foliage is purple.

Coreopsis (Tickseed)

Lovely daisy like flowers, usually yellow but new cultivars have bicolours. Easy to grow clump forming perennial for sun or partial shade. Height varies from 45 cm to 120 cm and spread 45 - 60 cm.

Delphinium (Larkspur)

Loved by bees, these statuesque perennials grace any garden with their tall flower spikes in June & July. There are many colours to this family. They prefer full sun in a soil that is not too dry. Height to 120 cm with a spread of 75 cm

Digitalis (Foxglove)

Tall plant with vivid flowers ranging in colour from pink, purple, yellow, white, peach and apricot. Best in partial shade where they reach a height of 120 cm. They freely self seed in a moist but well drained soil. Flower during the summer.

Echium vulgare (Vipers Bugloss)

Member of the Borage family, the flowers start pink but then turn a lovely blue in a branched spike during June to August. Loved by bees and all pollinating insects, prefers full sun in a fairly fertile soil.

Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed, Hemp agrimony)

Hardy perennial forming a clump of sturdy pointed leaves over which are carried clusters of small deep pink flowers mid summer to autumn. Grow in moist but well drained soil in sun or part shade. Some varieties will reach 160 cm in height x a spread of up to 100 cm. Bees, butterflies & other pollinating insects love this easy to grow plant.

Gaura lindheimeri (Beeblossoms)

Graceful starry flowers in pink or white. It's best position is full sun where it will flower on slender stems from early summer to early autumn.

Geum (Avens)

Well known and easy to grow, these are wonderful perennials for colour from spring through summer. So many varieties & colours all hardy and a real asset to the garden. Moist or well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Height to 60 cm x 60 cm spread.

Helleborus (Christmas Rose)

Useful hardy evergreen perennial for semi shade or shade in a moist or well drained soil. Will grow in clay conditions. White, cream, yellow, purple or red flowers during winter & spring. Height & spread 45 cm x 45 cm.

Knautia arvensis (Field Scabious)

Loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, this is our native Scabious, grows to a height of 150 cm x 30 cm spread. Fully hardy in full sun and well drained alkaline soil. Lavender flowers midsummer to early autumn.

Lavendula (English Lavender)

Lovely scented evergreen cottage garden perennial, a bees & butterfly favourite. Can make a wonderful low hedge. Needs full sun and a well drained soil. Blue flower spikes throughout summer and in to autumn. Height & spread 45 cm x 60 cm.

Liatris

Clump forming perennial with spikes of white or violet flowers during the summer and autumn. Prefers sun and well drained soil. 90 cm high x 45 cm spread.

Lupinus (Lupin)

Wonderful clump forming perennial with racemes of pea-like flowers in pink, white, yellow, red, blue, purple or bicolours in early summer. Prefers sun & well drained soil. 90 cm x 75 cm.

Lythrum (Loosestrife)

Summer to autumn flowering perennials that thrive by the waterside or a damp or bog garden. Grow in full sun or semi-shade. Lovely flower spikes of pink shades that are loved by pollinating insects. Height 90 cm x 60 cm spread.

Monada (Bergamot, Beebalm)

Wonderful, outstanding perennial for bees & butterflies. The foliage is aromatic, the flowers simply stunning, certainly interesting. Deep pink, pink, violet, scarlet, red, deep red, purple or white flowers mid summer to early autumn. Moist or well drained soil in sun or part shade. 90 cm high x 50 cm spread.

Oenothera (Evening primrose)

A profusion of flowers from late spring to late summer, the flowers are short lived but just keep on coming. Requires full sun & a well drained soil, self seeds readily. Several different varieties, some low growing & spreading, some reach 60 cm.

Penstemon

Lovely tubular to bell shaped flowers during summer. A semi evergreen perennial requiring full sun and a well drained soil. 90 cm tall x 45 cm wide.

Polemonium (Jacob's ladder) Derbyshire's flower.

Hardy clump forming perennial flowering spring to summer. Pale blue, blue, pink or white flower clusters. Grow in any moist or well drained soil in sun or part shade. 30 - 90 cm high x 45 cm spread.

Primula (Primrose)

There is a Primula for every site - rock garden, gravel garden, peat, bog & pool garden, borders, greenhouse & alpine house. Most are hardy and flower in the early spring and summer.

Rudbeckia (Coneflower)

Wonderful family of hardy perennials grown for their fabulous flowers. They thrive in sun or shade in well drained or moist soil. Golden yellow with black or brown centered flowers late summer through autumn. 80 cm high x 45 cm spread.

Scabiosa (Scabious)

Family of annuals & perennials, some are evergreen, their flowers are very good for cutting. Prefer sun & fertile well drained alkaline soil. A lovely plant for pollinating insects, especially bees & butterflies. They flower summer to autumn.

Teucrium

Evergreen perennial with lovely flowers and sometimes scented foliage. Needs sun & well drained soil. Flowers mid summer to autumn. 60 cm x 60 cm.

Trollius (Globe Flower).

Spring to summer flowering hardy perennial that thrive by pools and streams. Tolerates sun or shade in a moist soil. 60 cm high x 50 cm spread.

Verbena

Outstanding perennial and annual for bees & butterflies, they are sturdy and upright with numerous blue or lilac flowers from summer to mid autumn. Grow in well drained soil in full sun. Can reach up to 160 cm tall x 50 cm spread.

Veronicastrum (Culver root)

Outstanding sturdy hardy perennial for the back of the border reaching a height of 160 cm. They are evergreen and have very elegant pale blue, white or pink flower spikes from mid summer to mid autumn. Grow in clay moist soil in sun or part shade.

Viola (Violet)

Family of annuals & perennials grown for their lovely flowers, some of which are scented & edible. Varieties will flower spring to autumn, growing happily in sun or part shade in moist or well drained soil.

Ajuga (Bugle)

Evergreen & semi evergreen perennial for partial or full shade. Wonderful ground cover, tolerant of a moist soil. Lovely blue flowers late spring to early summer.

Aquilegia (Columbine)

Lovely cottage garden perennial with star or bell-shaped flowers from late spring to summer. Easy to grow just about any site or soil, but is happiest in moist but well drained soil in sun or part shade. Outstanding cottage garden hardy plant.

Armeria maritima (Thrift, Sea Pink)

Vigorous clump forming evergreen perennial with white or pink flowers through spring into summer. Prefers any well drained soil in full sun. Height & spread 20 cm x 30 cm.

Astilbe

Versatile hardy perennial, grows equally well in sun or shade, they also thrive in boggy ground. Lovely flower spikes late spring and early summer. Height & spread 60 cm x 60 cm.

Campanula (Bellflower)

Lovely cottage garden plant, easy to grow in any soil in sun or part shade. Numerous bell shaped flowers early summer. 60 - 80 cm high x 45 - 60 cm spread

Dianthus (Garden Pink)

A huge family of lovely scented plants, of which most are alpines and evergreen. There are some taller Dianthus for a sunny border and these tend to be short lived. The alpines are compact and grow to 30 cm in height and 45 cm in spread.

Echinacea (Coneflower)

Magnificent family of stunning perennials. Loved by bees & butterflies. Full sun but also tolerant of partial shade. So many different colours to suit every garden. Grow to a height of 120 cm with a spread of 60 cm.

Echinops (Globe Thistle)

Easy to grow in the sun, they will tolerate a heavy clay or a sandy loam. They are very robust reaching a height of 100 cm and a spread of 60 cm.

Erigeron karvinskianus profusion (Mexican Fleabane)

Lovely low growing spreading perennial giving a profusion of daisy flowers opening white and fading to pink. Self seeds freely in sun and dry soils. Height 15 cm x 90 cm spread.

Eryngium (Sea Holly)

Brilliant blue flowers and prolific through July, August & September. Fully hardy and clump forming, some varieties growing to 1 m high x 45 cm spread. Dislike excessive wet but will tolerate a poor dry soil in full sun.

Filipendula (Meadow Sweet)

Hardy perennial with plume like flowers from late spring to late summer. They grow in clay or chalk in moist or well drained soil in sun or partial shade. They can reach over 1 m in height x 60 cm spead.

Geranium (Cranesbill)

Robust wonderful hardy perennial for ground cover. They are unfussy as to soil & situation, even tolerating full shade. The flower shades are blue, pink, purple and white and flower over very long periods throughout summer and autumn. Height & spread 60 cm x 60 cm.

Helenium (Sneezeweed)

Excellent hardy perennial, invaluable as they flower early summer into autumn. Bees adore them. Grow in any moist soil in sun or part shade, they are tall and robust, reaching 90 cm x 60 cm spread.

Heuchera (Alum root, Coral flower)

Fully hardy evergreen ground cover perennial, forming large clumps of leaves, often purple or bronze, but many new cultivars have been introduced for their lovely foliage effect. Flowers in summer. Prefers semi shade in moisture retentive soil. Height & spread guidance 60 cm x 60 cm.

Knautia macedonica (Scabious)

Clump forming perennial with red or pink pin cushion flowers adored by bees & butterflies. Flowers summer to mid autumn. Loves well drained soil in full sun. Grows to 120 cm in height by 45 cm spread.

Leucanthemum (Shasta Daisy)

Fully hardy perennial with a profusion of large daisy like flowers during the summer. Grow in any moist or well drained soil in sun or part shade. Some varieties reach 120 cm, most grow to 60 cm.

Lobelia

Fully hardy to frost tender, these perennials have lovely scarlet, red, pink, salmon or blue flower spikes during summer and autumn. Full sun or part shade in moist or well drained soil. Height & spread 60 cm x 60 cm.

Lychnis flos-cuculi (Ragged robin)

Clump forming perennial with feathery clusters of pink/purple flowers late spring and early summer. Grow in moist or well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Height 45 cm x 45 cm.

Nepeta (Catmint)

Aromatic summer flowering fully hardy perennial, blue, pink, purple or violet flower spikes late spring in to the autumn. Bees & butterflies love this plant. Useful for edging, especially where it can tumble over paths & paving. Will tolerate clay or sandy soil, well drained or moist in sun or part shade. 90 cm x 60 cm.

Osteospermum (Cape Daisy)

Scented foliage, semi evergreen, these wonderful showy, colourful plants flower from late spring to late autumn. Grow in any moist or well drained soil in sun. 60 cm x 60 cm.

Papaver orientale (Poppy)

Clump forming hardy perennial with large flowers with black centres late spring to early summer. Grow in any well drained soil in sun. 90 cm high x 90 cm.

Phlox

Plants for the rock garden or borders, this wonderful diverse family of often scented flowers will grow in clay moist soil in sun or part shade. Heights vary from 10 cm to 60 cm , spread 30 cm to 75 cm. Flowering from spring to autumn.

Potentilla

Truly outstanding hardy perennial, they just keep on flowering all summer and through the autumn. Red, yellow, pink, white & scarlet rosette shaped flowers. Grow in well drained soil in the sun. 60 cm high x 60 cm.

Salvia (Sage)

Stunning family of bee adoring perennials, some of which are reliably hardy others less so. Their flowers are brightly coloured and the foliage often aromatic. They need sun and fertile well drained soil.

Sedum (Stonecrop)

Mostly evergreen & hardy, preferring full sun & fertile well drained soil. There are varieties suitable for the rock garden and the borders varying in height from just 5 cm to 60 cm, spreading to 60 cm. They flower during the summer in to the autumn.

Thalictrum (Meadow rue)

Lovely hardy perennial with fluffy flower heads from summer to early autumn. Grow in clay moist soil in sun or part shade, they do well at the edges of woodland gardens. 120 cm high x 60 cm spread.

Tiarella (Foam Flower)

Excellent for ground cover, this lovely perennial is fully hardy and tolerates deep shade, prefers moist but well drained soil. Flowers late spring to summer. 20 - 25 cm high x 25 - 30 cm spread.

Verbascum (Mullein)

Summer flowering perennial, tolerates shade but prefers an open sunny site and well-drained soil. Most are semi-evergreen, growing to a height of 90 cm x 50 cm.

Veronica (Speedwell)

Semi evergreen or evergreen perennial grown for their lovely usually blue flower spikes which bees adore. There are new varieties which are pink, red, mauve, lilac & white. Some need sun and a well drained soil, others prefer a moist soil in sun or part shade. Vary in height from just 10 cm to 75 cm.
